Men’s Sheds Information Day

Kate Rooney

Men’s Sheds (or Sheds) are a group of voluntary organisation in Northern Ireland and elsewhere that provide a gathering place for like-minded people to provide social opportunities, predominantly for men, but sheds also welcome female members. Similar to garden sheds – the Men’s Shed is a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practice skills and enjoy making and mending.

However, the real benefit from sheds comes from the opportunity to meet and talk. This is because men typically find it more difficult to build social connections than women, and rarely share personal concerns about health and personal worries; sheds can facilitate having someone to share your worries with.

They are about having fun, sharing skills and knowledge with like‐minded people and gaining a renewed sense of purpose and belonging.

As a by‐product of all of that, they reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness, they allow men to deal with mental health challenges more easily and remain independent.

Mayor, Councillor Thomas Hogg, officially opens the Newtownabbey Men’s Shed with Chairperson Mark McGranaghan

The chair of Newtownabbey Men's Shed, Mark McGranaghan will talk about the network of sheds throughout NI and the benefits of Northern Ireland Water employees being involved in a social activity programme for all ages, not just those retired or contemplating retirement.

Venue will be chosen dependent on demand.

If you are interested in attending the talk, please call Alanna Lavery HR at ext. 20910 or use the email link below:
